Dairy products – A high percentage of people who complain of IBS
are really lactose intolerant. Either get a test for lactose intolerance
from your Doctor, or give up dairy products for a few days, and see how
it goes.
Fatty foods – You know what they are! Fried foods, chocolate, mayonnaise,
etc.
Acidic foods – Apples, oranges, vinegar, cider, wine, etc.
Coffee, coffee, coffee! - Sorry coffee lovers, but you could try decaf,
or cut down.
Embrace
Fibre - Many people with IBS report vast improvements by
increasing fibre in their diets. The non-soluble type, found in bran,
fruit, vegetables, and whole grains are best.
Fluid – Generally drink between six and eight glasses
of water per day, preferably water.
Alcohol – What, didn’t I say avoid it? Well
yes, but a little of what you fancy does you good. If you must drink,
avoid red wine and beer. The complex carbohydrates in beer and the tannin
in red wine cause the most distress.
Exercise – Exercise strengthens the body, and hence
the bowels. It can also reduce stress, and release endorphins, which help
control pain.
